Job Search Techniques

The Sudbury Resource Centre has a number of resources for job seekers. Our Centre has a number of daily newspapers, job search books, computers, workshops and a job board to help you. In addition, we post the last 5 business days of the Job Bank listings.

Many things go into launching, and maintaining a successful job hunt. Once you have a clear job objective (or objectives), and have prepared your résumé (or résumés), you need to plan to use multiple strategies. You will want to check advertised jobs in the newspaper, job bank and on the Internet. However, it is also very important to tap into the "hidden" job market (non-advertised). To find these jobs, you will need to network with everyone you know, and everyone they know. Preparing a "one minute sale" will help you when talking to friends, colleagues and strangers about what you are looking for and why you are qualified. You will also want to research and apply directly to companies that interest you. It is important to follow-up on these applications. Walking in to places to speak with the manager, and cold calling are two other strategies that may work in your job search. Temporary employment agencies are another possible source of work.

While you are conducting your search, it is very important to keep good records of who you contacted, when and what was done.

Our centre can help you to prepare and learn new strategies for your job search.
