Résumés and Cover Letters

 Résumé

Our experience has been that for 90% of the people we see, a one page or two page targeted, skill based / combination style résumé works best. A skill based / combination style résumé shows the employer what you want to do and how your skills and experience relate to your objective. This is done by separating your relevant experience (i.e. your duties and accomplishments) from your work history. For most people, the chronological format, where duties are listed under each job, doesn't best show the employer what you can do for them. This is especially true if you are career changing, have little paid experience, gaps in your work history, or varied jobs. However, if you’ve had positions within the same industry, a chronological style may suit your needs.

Feel free to use these samples and adapt them to your situation.

 Cover Letter

Cover letters work best if they are tailored to the specific job and the specific employer. A vague, general cover letter usually doesn't grab the employer's attention. This means that you need to write (or revise) a new letter every time.
This is especially true if you are career changing, have little paid experience, gaps in your work history, or varied jobs.

We have examples, resources to assist you to write short, eye-catching résumés and effective cover letters. Contact a Counsellor for a ONE-TO-ONE session with flexible times provided.
